Intelligent Quality Control


smarti® WS 100 lumber compact scanner is an intelligent system for multipurpose quality control of cracks, grain deviation, knots, lack of material, complete board dimensions, color variations, finger joints etc. for wooden boards of various dimensions. The system can be used in any wood industry application requiring quality control of wood. Innovation combines a high-resolution camera, laser encoders, various sensors, optic and laser three-dimensional reader capable of detecting the smallest defects. Technology is based on a laser triangulation camera combining laser beam data and high definition image. The system then computes a real-time 3D model along with the required feedback on an integrated touch screen display. Software part of the solution is based on the in-house developed artificial intelligence algorithms for machine learning image processing. The system is taught for each client, which parameters are required to be detected and classified.

With smarti® WS 100 lumber compact scanner we can detect, measure and evaluate knots, cracks, lack of material, dimensions of wooden boards, classify colors and grain deviation. We can support very high production line speeds, while high quality images are taken automatically and the accurate data is presented. Quality of the wood can be determined in percentage for each parameter separately, which is the important data for the further machinery actions. We can control the line machinery for sorting and grading, cutting rtc. For the finger joints, location is presented and calculated clearly within the software interface, so any possible side shift or imperfect matching of the joint can be detected immediately. Any possible knot, crack, lack of material etc. in the wood is recognized and evaluated. Edge of the board is also detected and recognized automatically. Slope of the edge and quality are determined autonomously as well. Wooden board length, width and height are also presented and evaluated by the system.

Done Properly


Our one sided scanning solution is regularly used for finger joint quality scanning. Therefore, we have also developed advanced scanning features regarding finger joints. We can notice imperfections regarding glue that is binding the boards together. An important aspect that can normally cause problems with joint scanning. Special types of glue are usually used as a binding material, which can sometimes leak out of the joint area. This problem is solved by an artificial intelligence background with custom developed algorithms that can determine the actual state of the joints and then send the optimal feedback to the production process. For finger joint applications, we can also detect side shifts, different board heights, joint spacing, cracks etc.
